How to Use Voicemail to Get MLM Prospects to Call You Back

4 min read

If you've been in network marketing longer than a week, you already know the drill. You dial a lead, it rings four times, and you get a robotic voice telling you to leave a message. Most reps either hang up or leave something awkward that guarantees no callback. That's a wasted dial. Voicemail is not a dead end. It's a 20-second ad slot that lands directly in your prospect's pocket. The reps who learn to use it well end up with inbound calls instead of chasing people all day.

Why Most MLM Voicemails Get Deleted

The average person gets more voicemails than they want and listens to maybe one in five. The ones that get deleted fastest share three traits: they sound scripted, they pitch something, and they're too long.

When your prospect hears a slow, overly polished voice saying something like "Hi, I came across your information and I have an incredible opportunity I'd love to share with you," their thumb moves to delete before you finish the sentence. They've heard that message a hundred times. You need to sound like a human calling another human, not a telemarketer reading off a card.

The 20-Second Rule

Keep every voicemail under 20 seconds. That's roughly 45 to 55 words. Any longer and you lose them. Any shorter and you sound suspicious.

Inside those 20 seconds, you need to cover four things: who you are, why you're calling, a reason to call back, and your number stated twice. That's it. No company name, no pitch, no excitement about the opportunity. Save all of that for the actual conversation.

A Script That Actually Gets Callbacks

Here's a voicemail that works for fresh MLM leads. Adjust the words so they sound like you, but keep the structure.

"Hey [First Name], this is [Your Name]. I was following up on the info you requested about working from home. I've got a couple quick questions before I can send you anything else. Give me a call back when you get a second at [number]. Again, that's [number]. Talk soon."

Notice what's missing. No company. No product. No promises. The curiosity gap does the work. They requested information, you have questions before you give them more, and that pattern interrupt is what pulls the callback.

Tone Beats Words Every Time

You can read the perfect script and still get zero callbacks if your tone is wrong. Prospects can smell desperation and over-rehearsal through the phone.

Speak slightly faster than you normally would, like you're a busy person squeezing in a call between meetings. Don't drag out words. Don't use that fake upbeat radio voice. If you sound like you have better things to do, prospects assume you're successful and worth calling back. If you sound like you're begging, they assume the opposite.

When to Leave the Voicemail

Timing matters more than most reps realize. Leaving voicemails at 9 a.m. on Monday puts you at the bottom of a 50-message pile. Try these windows instead: Tuesday through Thursday, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., or between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Lunch and after-work windows get you heard because that's when people actually check their phones. Avoid Friday afternoons and Sunday nights. One is checkout time, the other is anxiety time. Neither leads to a callback.

The Follow-Up Text That Doubles Callbacks

Within two minutes of leaving the voicemail, send a short text to the same number. Something like: "Hey [Name], just left you a voicemail about the info you requested. Call me when you can."

That combo of voicemail plus text roughly doubles your callback rate in most tests. The voicemail triggers recognition, the text makes it easy to see your number without having to listen to the recording. People are more likely to tap and call than to retrieve a voicemail.

Working Fresh Leads Changes Everything

The best voicemail script in the world won't save you if you're calling leads that are three months old and have been pitched by twelve other reps. The freshness of the list is doing half the work.

That's why daily lead flow matters. Services like Leads Club send a small batch of fresh network marketing leads every day, which keeps your pipeline moving and gives your voicemail script a fair shot. You can see how that works at /mlm-leads if you're tired of calling cold, overworked lists.

Track, Adjust, Repeat

Keep a simple log. For every 20 voicemails you leave, write down how many called back. If your rate is under 10 percent, your script or tone needs work. If it's between 10 and 20 percent, you're in the pocket. Above 20 percent, you've got something worth teaching your team.

Record yourself leaving a voicemail and listen back. It will be painful. Do it anyway. You'll hear the filler words, the fake enthusiasm, the hesitation at the end. Fix one thing at a time. Within two weeks, you'll notice your phone ringing more than it used to, and that changes the entire feel of your business.
